TOKYO -- A total of 802 financial institutions so far have applied to the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications to gain access to the network of ATMs operated by the postal savings system.
In mid-January 1999, the postal savings system will begin allowing mutual linkups between its ATM network and those of other institutions.
This month Merrill Lynch Japan Inc. applied, becoming the first foreign-affiliated brokerage to do so.
