India's Department of Post plans to deploy 1,000 ATMs across the country under a modernization plan, Minister of State for Communications and IT, Sachin Pilot said.
According to The Times of India, Pilot told Parliament that 820 offices had been identified for deployments and another 180 would be named as the project proceeded. All Indian states will be included in the deployment plan.
DoP has selected five major technology companies for five of its technology advancement projects, which include not only the ATM installations, but also post office computerization and IT modernization. The department has issued Letters of Intent to Infosys, Tata Consultancy Services, Sify and Reliance Communications Infrastructure.
DoP has approval to spend Rs1,877.20 crore ($356.3 million) to be spent across these projects over a period of two years and will seek additional funds when the need arises.
The DoP plans to computerize all its 155,000 post offices across the country by 2013.
