US ATM fees reach record high

A just-released study from Bankrate.com says that ATM fees have increased by 21 percent within the past five years.

October 5, 2015

The average fee for using an out-of-network ATM has risen four percent over the past year to a record $4.52 per transaction, according to Bankrate.com.

The personal finance website said that its 18th annual study shows a rise of 21 percent in ATM fees over the past five years. This number is based on the combined fees charged by an out-of-network ATM operator and a cardholder's home bank.

Off-us transactions were most expensive in Atlanta ($5.15) and least expensive in San Francisco ($3.85), the study found.

The average overdraft fee also hit a new high ($33.07), and charted a nine percent increase since 2010. Milwaukee has the nation's highest average overdraft fee ($34.79), while San Francisco has the lowest ($30.35).

"The most important thing for consumers to know is that all of these fees are completely avoidable," said Bankrate.com Chief Financial Analyst Greg McBride.
