Security alert warns of next-gen stereo skimmer

The device is based on existing stereo skimming techniques, but uses sophisticated new technology, according to TMD Security.

September 23, 2015

TMD Security today reported that the company has become aware of skimming attacks in Ireland using "next gen" stereo skimming technology.

In a security alert, the company said it has been "actively involved in a collaborative investigation" initiated by the bank that first discovered the skimmers.

TMD said that testing and analysis prove the device is based on the stereo skimming technique, but that it uses sophisticated new technology.

It is likely that all electromagnetic jamming signals will be partially — if not completely — vulnerable to the new device, the company said.

TMD Security R&D reportedly has developed new defenses against this second-generation stereo skimmer, and said in the alert that, shortly, it will issue information and recommendations for combatting the threat.

ATM deployers can contact TMD via email for further information about the attack.
