Not to be outdone by neighboring India, Pakistan has pulled off a feat of one-upmanship, toppling its avowed rival's record for the world's highest ATM by some 1,000 feet.
The new installation by the National Bank of Pakistan sits at 15,397 feet above sea level in Khunjerab Pass on the Pakistan-China border. According to Daily Pakistan, the generator-powered ATM will be open during daylight hours year round — even through harsh winter conditions.
Kupup, an outpost in the Indian Himalayas, has long boasted the top spot (literally) among high-altitude ATMs, at 14,300 feet. That machine was installed by Union Bank of India. in 2007 and is used primarily by tourists and army personnel stationed at the China-India border, according to Zee News.
There is room for India to recapture its old record. It is home to Kanchenjunga, the world's third highest peak at 28,169 feet — although at 28,250 feet, Pakistan's K2 maintains an 81-foot advantage .
Tibet beats both of them with Mt. Everest with its 29,035-foot peak.
