New publication sets out recommendations for ATM user interface

ATMIA aims to establish global guidelines that will help deployers maximize modern UI capabilities.

August 13, 2014

The ATM Industry Association has announced the publication of new international industry recommendations for maximizing the ATM user interface for about 2.4 million ATMs worldwide.

The document provides recommendations for the general navigation through ATM menus, transaction flow, and customer communications, — including advertising, marketing, and security advisement. A large section is dedicated to customization by the ATM user or owner, and to the ATM environment and signage. The last chapter considers how the ATM UI interacts with potential non-card devices.

“The importance of the ATM as a customer service channel is growing,” said CEO Mike Lee. “We’ve identified opportunities to enhance the customer experience by ensuring the consumer needs at the ATM are met.”

The manual describes how new interface technologies — e.g., tactile and multitouch capabilities, biometrics and HTML 5 — allow concepts usually limited to mobile devices and tablets to be extended to ATM UIs.

“But there are also specific constraints in our technology environment which have to be taken into account including accessibility requirements and numerous security regulations,” Lee said.

ATMIA developed the comprehensive recommendations based on input from deployers, software and hardware manufacturers, technical experts, processors, researchers, and card issuers.

“We’d like to thank Technical Editor, Véronique Delsalle, and her strong team of experts, named in the acknowledgments, for helping to take the ATM to the next level as the 21st century’s main payments hub for consumers,” Lee said.

The document, which is part of the ATMIA best practice library, is free to ATMIA members.
