DES describes the Data Encryption Algorithm, or more precisely, outlines how it is to be implemented. This algorithm (or equation) is used to encrypt cardholder PINs from the ATM to the network, processor and financial institution.
Triple DES (also known as 3DES or TDES) adds a new level of security and successfully blocks an exhaustive key search. The triple length algorithm utilizes three key strings to encrypt, de-encrypt and encrypt the security key from the ATM to the processor, network, and financial institution. The same process works when de-encrypting the key to the host.
