Authorities in the Sundargarh district of India have advised banks that opening accounts for the country's rural unbanked is not enough; they must also educate their customers about ATM use to keep them from being conned.
According to a report in Times of India, Sundargarh police called a meeting of bankers to impress upon them the importance of teaching customers new to the banking system how to use the ATM properly in order to protect their bank accounts.
Police officer Birmitrapur Suman Dutta told bankers that after one man was "helped" by a youth to withdraw money at an ATM, Rs 2.4 lakh ($4400) was stolen from his bank account.
"It is the duty of bank officials to organize customer awareness programs and tell people about the dos and don'ts of ATM cards," the article quoted a senior police official as saying.
