Hughes Communications India Ltd., a subsidiary of broadband satellite network provider Hughes Network Systems LLC, has landed contracts with India's public sector banks to connect 27,000 offsite ATMs with a secure broadband satellite network over the next two years. The company also will provide managed network services for a number of public sector banks.
Altogether, the contracts add up to Rs 200 crore ($36 million) and represent the largest sum awarded to date in an Indian finance ministry project that seeks to add 63,000 ATMs across India within the next two years. Hughes is one of nine managed service providers to have been chosen for the project through a series of reverse auctions.
The company will install and operate HN9200 and HN9400 satellite broadband terminals at ATM sites and provide managed services on a round-the-clock basis through its shared network operations center. HCIL also will provide an MPLS backbone network connecting all participating banks and MSPs from the ATM sites to data and disaster recovery centers at the public service banks.
"The Indian ATM industry is growing at an exponential rate, and this project will bring much-needed banking services to consumers and businesses across the country," said Partho Banerjee, president and managing director at HCIL. "Upon completion it will bring our total managed sites to over 60,000, providing secure satellite connectivity with uptimes of greater than 99.9 percent and enabling 24/7 banking services."
