Britons today are enjoying the highest-ever rate of access to fee-free ATMs. Out of the U.K.'s 65,884 ATMs on LINK, the national network to which nearly all ATMs are connected, 45,033, or 68 percent are available for free cash withdrawal.
Of those that do charge fees, said an article by Savings, most are in convenience stores. Typically the surcharge at these ATMs is £3 ($3.22). The article said that, according to LINK, the number of free machines has risen as the result of a government effort to identify areas of the country where free access to cash was scarce.
LINK said that more than 850 fee-free ATMs have been installed and today, 95 percent of people in these areas have access to free cash within one kilometre of the center of the defined area.
"These new cash machines have brought local free-of-charge access to cash to around two million people previously without a free-to-use cash machine in their area," said Dr Ken Andrew, chairman of the LINK Consumer Council.
