ATM ban costs Aussie gaming halls $65m

Since a ban on ATMs in gaming facilities took effect in July, spending on poker machines has dropped by $62 million (US$65 million) in the Australian state of Victoria.

The government enacted the ATM ban to combat problem gambling, said a story by Australia's ABC News. So far, it's believed to have resulted in a 6.7 percent drop in the take of poker machines, or "pokies."

"Easy accessibility to ATMs really did tend to undermine [spending intentions] so we're really pleased by the fact that, initially at least, the first four months indicate that gamblers are taking this reform to heart," said Victoria gaming minister Michael O'Brien.
