An ATM security system designed by 10 students from Xi'an Jiaotong University in China's Shaanxi Province won third prize at the Oct. 26 Finance and Information Technology Application Contest held in Wuhan, in Hubei Province.

According to an article by Global Times, the students' solution was designed to deter ATM tampering and fraud by notifying the host bank when it detects an ATM user wearing a mask or dark glasses.

As they researched their ATM security project, the Xi'an Jiaotong University team found that ATM thieves often wear hats, masks or sunglasses to obscure their faces. So the team developed a security system that alerts on any ATM user whose face is unreasonably obscured.

"We combined face-recognition technology and long-range image transmission technology together," said project leader Gong Chen, a senior studying software. "Everyone worked very hard."

Gong said that the system still needs perfecting but that some companies have expressed interest in the technology, accordng to the article.
