ATM hold-ups are serious crimes. But now and then a story comes across the police blotter about a crook so clueless it's comic.
Case in point, last Friday night police received a call from two women who said they had approached an ATM intending to use it, but encountered a man sitting on a bench nearby acting strangely, a Metro West Daily report said. Additionally, the women said, he appeared to have a gun stuck in the waistband of his pants.
When police arrived, they found Eric Lee Siggins sitting on the bench with his head between his legs, apparently passed out. He was wearing a hoodie and had a scarf covering his face.
Siggins recovered sufficient alertness to struggle with police as they handcuffed him, at which point a BB pistol fell out of his pants. Siggins was also carrying a mat knife, handcuffs, duct tape and a "string" knotted into a noose, the story said.
Police charged Siggins with attempted armed robbery. However his attorney, Mark Wester, said there were no grounds for charges, as his client was not sufficiently conscious to carry out a crime. "He was passed out," Wester said.
