The amount of cash in circulation is increasing at a rate of about 6 percent per year, spurred by economic growth and the use of ATMs. The cost of keeping all this cash in circulation — of counting, validating, processing, transporting and protecting it — is increasing as well.
Wincor Nixdorf studies have pegged the cost of cash-handling worldwide at $300 billion per year. In Europe, where the cost burden is especially high, and in emerging markets, where the demand for cash is especially high, FIs and IADs are readily adopting cash-recycling technologies for automated teller safes and ATMs.

In the U.S., where costs are lower, these technologies have been slower to catch on.
