Portugal aims to secure at-risk ATMs

A total of 840 ATMs in Portugal have been robbed during the past five years, with thieves successfully stealing money 40 percent of if the time, a story in The Portugal News reported.

Speaking during the Parliamentary Commission on Constitutional Affairs, Rights, Freedoms and Guarantees, Minister for Internal Affairs Miguel Macedo said that of the more than 14,000 ATMs in the country, many were “in vulnerable situations” while others were in “isolated areas.”

Portugal’s security forces are working with Interbanking Services and banks themselves to implement “additional security measures” that will make ATM robberies more difficult in the future.
