Banks in Cambodia installed 87 new ATMs in the kingdom in 2011 as the number of branches and cardholders continued to grow in cities and beyond, said a news report by the Phnom Penh Post.
The country had 588 ATMs at the end of last year, up from 501 in 2010, according to the National Bank of Cambodia. NBC Chairwoman Nguon Sokha said foreign banks entering the Cambodian market and growth in rural ATMs accounted for the increase.
As depositors became increasingly comfortable with technology, the number of cardholders also increased at ACLEDA Bank, Cambodia’s largest domestically owned bank, said the bank’s senior vice president for marketing Sok Sophea. “Before, customers were not familiar with the technology. They didn’t know how to use the machines. But this is changing very quickly,” she said.
