Turkey's Isbank has installed approximately 3,400 Hitachi biometric finger vein scanners in ATMs and branches across the country, enabling customers to withdraw cash without a card, said a news story on finextra.com. The deployment is the largest to date in Europe.
Isbank worked with technology vendor MIG International to install the biometric scanners in 2,400 NCR and Wincor Nixdorf ATMs; another 1,000 scanners have been rolled out in the bank’s branches. Isbank is now conducting trials of the system with merchants as part of a plan to create the largest biometric POS network in the world.
"Our customers seem to be genuinely interested in the idea of using biometrics in banking and payments transactions and Isbank will continue to innovate with new services based on biometrics," said Hakan Aran, CIO for Isbank.
Hitachi's finger vein authentication technology uses light to read the unique pattern of veins inside the finger. The system is used widely in Japan, where more than 75,000 finger vein-based ATMs have been installed since 2006.
