The Associated Press reports that several banks are waiving out-of-network ATM fees for customers hit hard by Hurricane Irene.
Chase Bank said it will waive fees for customers in 13 states through Sunday, including Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont and Virginia.
The waived fees also include overdraft fees on checking accounts and late fees for credit cards and mortgages.
Wells Fargo said it will waive out-of-network ATM fees as well through Friday for customers in Connecticut, New Jersey and New York.
Bank of America, Capital One, Citi and PNC Bank said they waive fees on a case-by-case basis for customers facing hardships as a result of natural disasters, according to the article.
On Tuesday, more than 2.5 million people from North Carolina to Maine were still without electricity because of Hurricane Irene, and airlines said it would be days before thousands of stranded passengers made it home.
Early estimates place Irene's damage between $7 billion to $10 billion.
