A new report from consulting firm Solutions Research Group reveals that mobile banking apps have gone from zero to 2.5 million Canadian users in 14 months, according to Canadian news outlet The Wire Report.
The study, "2011 Mobile Money and Banking Report," states that 38 percent of Canadian smartphone users utilize a banking app and more than 60 percent expressed interest in using their smartphones as debit and credit cards.
“Unlike many technology innovations where there is a male versus female gap, interest is basically even by gender (61 percent among women, 60 percent among men), and it’s a popular idea across age groups as well,” SRG said in a press release. “While 66 percent of the 18-34 set say they are very or somewhat interested in swiping their smartphones to buy things, the number drops only to 65 percent in the 35-49 group.”
The report also said that the 43 percent of smartphone users who aren’t interested in mobile payments attributed their lack of enthusiasm to the possibility of losing a phone and other security issues.
The study surveyed 419 English-speaking smartphone users with data plans in April.
