BB&T Corp., a Winston-Salem, N.C.-based bank, has expanded its ATM network into Florida and Texas after renewing a contract with Allpoint, the surcharge-free ATM network, said a BB&T spokesperson.
Before the renewal, which was announced yesterday, BB&T's agreement with Allpoint provided for surcharge-free ATM access to the bank's cardholders in North Carolina, the spokesperson said. The contract is for up to three years.
BB&T cardholders will now have access to 5,600 surcharge-free ATMs deployed in 7-Eleven, Walgreens, CVS, Target and Rite Aid stores and other retail outlets, said Ben Psillas, president of Allpoint, which is based in Bethesda, Md.
BB&T needed to expand its ATM presence into Florida and Texas, following the bank's August 2009 purchase of the failed Colonial Bank, which was based in Montgomery, Ala., the BB&T spokesperson said. Colonial Bank owned branches in Texas, Alabama, Florida, Georgia and Nevada. "We sold the Nevada operations," the spokesperson said.
Allpoint, which operates 40,000 surcharge-free ATMs worldwide, is owned by Cardtronics Inc., a Houston-based ATM ISO.
