Canadian bulldozer bandits bungle ATM theft
TORONTO -- Would-be ATM thieves plowed a stolen bulldozer into a Toronto Dominion Bank branch on a busy street without attracting any attention, according to authorities at the Toronto Metro Police Department. "Nobody saw anything," said an incredulous detective quoted in an APBNews.com report. Not a single call came in to police headquarters during the 3:16 a.m. crime. A bank alarm sounded, but the security guard on duty was delayed by a call at another bank for about 45 minutes. When the guard finally reported to the intersection where the branch was located, he found brick and glass everywhere and an abandoned backhoe in the bank parking lot. Ironically, the only thing left standing at the entrance of the bank was the ATM. The machine was damaged, but the cash was intact. Police are puzzled about how the bandits got the bulldozer -- which was stolen from a lot in a town 45 minutes north of Toronto -- to the bank without attracting any attention. While investigators speculate that the bandits may have used a tractor-trailer to haul the earthmover, no one reported seeing anything of the kind. "And no one reported a bulldozer driving down the 401 either," a detective said. Authorities are treating the bungled burglary as an isolated incident. There is no indication that it is linked to any other ATM crimes in the city in which thieves have tried to hoist ATMs onto the beds of pickup trucks.
