ALEXANDRIA, Va. -- Sixty-three percent of the country's convenience stores offer ATM services, according to the National Association of Convenience Stores' (NACS) recently released 2001 State of the Industry report.
According to a NACS news release, other popular services offered at c-stores include money orders (in 77 percent of stores) and copy/fax services (in 19 percent of stores).
Sales from the country's 119,751 c-stores topped a quarter-trillion dollars in 2000 ($269.4 billion), according to NACS. Overall, industry sales were up 15.1 percent over those of 1999, and are more than double those of 10 years ago.
Motor fuels sales continued to dominate overall convenience store sales, with the convenience store industry selling more than 60 percent of all motor fuels purchased in the U.S. Industry wide, motor fuels sales topped $165 billion in 2000, or more than $1.8 million at each of the 91,500 convenience stores that sold motor fuels.
While motor fuels sales revenues per store increased 19 percent, driven by higher gas prices, these higher prices and increased competition led to tighter motor fuels profit margins, which decreased 21 percent.
Foodservice - food prepared on site - led sales of in-store items, ranking first in gross profit dollars and second in overall sales. On average, foodservice sales were $115,400 per store, $13.8 billion for the entire convenience store industry.
