NEW YORK -- Customers of Bank of New York Co. Inc. have been unable to gain access to their accounts or withdraw cash from ATMs after the bank's mainframe computer system was damaged during Sept. 11's terror attacks that devastated the World Trade Center.
According to a Reuters report, agents at the company's Maywood, N.J. customer service center asked customers to use machines at other banks while it tries to resolve technical problems that began shortly after the attack.
"The mainframe is down," a customer service agent told Reuters. The bank is allowing withdrawals of $100 a day per customer, via ATMs at other financial institutions, she said.
Bank of New York customers will be reimbursed for the transaction charges and should save ATM receipts to present to their branch.
