LONDON -- The ATM Industry Association conference scheduled for Sept. 18-19 in London will go on, according to ATMIA International Director Mike Lee.

Commenting on yesterday's terrorist attack, in which hijackers flew airliners into the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., Lee said in a written statement: "The ATM Industry Association extends its deepest sympathies to those who have lost loved ones in the tragedy that struck America yesterday. Our heartfelt compassion and prayers go out to those impacted by the horrendous devastation."

However, Lee emphasized in the statement: "The ATMIA supports the principle of normalcy as soon as it is safe to do so. It believes in being strong, in standing together, in solidarity. The less things are seen to grind to a halt, the sooner control over daily life and work is re-established, the more a message of strength and resilience is portrayed."

In that light, the conference "Optimising ATMs in Britain and Europe" is slated to take place as planned at the Royal Lancaster Hotel in London.

"A minute's silence will be observed at the start of the London conference as a mark of reverence for those who have lost their lives," Lee said.

The ATMIA will monitor the situation for the remainder of this week, especially regarding any reported casualities from within the ATM industry and the availability of international flights, Lee said.
