NEW YORK -- Citigroup Inc. said on Sept. 5 that its U.S. Citibank network of 2,000 ATMs was running again, after software glitches shut the machines down for several hours on Sept. 4 and 5 and kept people from withdrawing cash.
"The ATM network has been restored at all Citibank locations and we expect to resolve all remaining issues shortly,' Citibank said in a statement.
The ATMs went down around 5 p.m. EDT on on Sept. 4, due to software problems, the bank said. Service was restored at around 9 p.m. EDT Tuesday, but the bank still was fixing systems early the next morning. Customers also continued to have problems withdrawing cash at ATMs on Sept. 5.
According to a Reuters report, Citibank said it added 500 customer service representatives to help out with problems and would refund fees its customers paid to use other banks' ATMs during the outages.
The Citibank online banking system also was not working properly earlier on Sept. 5, after crashing around the same time that the ATM network failed.
