DAYTON, Ohio – Because of their low rates of machines per capita, among other reasons, NCR sees India and China as the next hot spots for ATMs.
Andy Orent, vice president of global sales and services, financial solutions division, said that Asia reminds him of North America in the early 1980s when ATM deployment first began to take off.
"We're seeing absolutely explosive growth in Asia," Orent told attendees at the manufacturer's third annual self-service network summit. "It could be as big as the Americas in one year."
Asia is one area of the world where deployers have a keen interest in outsourcing their ATM programs, Orent added. "For everything down from the switch, they're looking to someone else to take over and manage their ATMs," he said.
In some parts of Asia, such as Malaysia, Orent said advanced functionality allows ATM users to perform up to 30 transactions at some machines, including such complex transactions as trading stocks.
Orent said that Europe is leading the way in migrating ATMs away from the OS/2 operating system to a browser-based environment. France, Germany, Spain and Italy are deploying NT-based machines in significant numbers. "They're two to three years ahead of us in the move toward NT," he said.
