DAYTON, Ohio – If there was any doubt that the majority of ATMs in the U.S. are found in off-premise locations, it was definitively laid to rest at NCR's third annual self-service network summit here.
According to Phil Kasper, vice president of marketing for the ATM self-service division, Americas, only about a third of ATMs are found at bank branches.
Based on sales numbers from recent years, known installed bases and other research data, Kasper said NCR believes the current installed base in the U.S. is 307,600 machines. Of that number, NCR thinks that 106,800 units are full-function ATMs located at bank branches, with the remaining 200,800 units found in retail sites.
NCR estimates that ISOs have deployed about 112,000 cash dispensers and that financial institutions account for another 79,800 units. The remaining number is split among three more unusual categories: retailer deployers like Publix Supermarkets with 4,400 units; vendor deployers such as Diebold with 2,000 units; and "new" deployers such as InnoVentry and 7-Eleven with 2,600 units.
"Off premise is the preferred venue now," Kasper told attendees of the summit, including representatives from software companies, transaction processors and networks.
The deployer breakdowns could change soon. Noting that contracts written in the early years of the off-premise phenomenon are about to expire, Kasper predicted there would be a significant amount of turnover in the existing installed base in the next two years.
