BRISBANE, Australia -- A dispute between Armaguard and the Transport Workers Union (TWU) flared up on Jan. 15 with armored van crews walking off the job for the second time in a month, according to a report in the Age.com.
The dispute hinges on plans by Armaguard to cut the crews of armored vans from three to two.
Earlier this month, many ATMs in Brisbane ran out of cash when the workers walked off the job for four hours over the issue.
The proposal to cut back on van crews has angered unions, including the Queensland Police Union, which claimed last week that smaller crews could lead to an increase in the number of armed robberies on Armaguard vans.
TWU secretary Hughie Williams said union members employed by Armaguard walked off the job at midday on the 15th. "We had a meeting of all the members employed by Armaguard and they decided unanimously to walk off the job for the remainder of the day," he said.
He said the 140 workers would return to their jobs at their normal starting times on Jan. 16.
