FARMINGTON, Maine - A convenience store ATM in Maine took a swim during the final weekend of January thanks to robbers who broke into the store and made off with the machine on Jan. 25.
After emptying the machine, which was stolen from Jack's Trading Post , the ATM was dumped into the Carrabassett River in New Portland, Maine. A snowmobiler saw the ATM in the frozen river the next night, and two members of the Franklin County Sheriff's Office - wearing cold-water rescue suits - retrieved the ATM on Jan. 27.
"The river was very shallow and everything was frozen over, and we were able to recover quite a bit of good evidence," Marc Bowering, a detective handling the case, told the Kennebec Journal.
Bowering said several suspects, who also made off with beer and cigarettes, have already been identified. There was no information on exactly how much money was stolen from the machine.
