TOKYO -- Omron Corp. and Microsoft Co. next month will begin marketing a new ATM in Japan which can be used to provide different services by modifying the operating program, according to the Nihon Keizai Shimbun.
Among applications the ATM is suited for are online shopping and plane ticket issuance. The two companies expect many of the machines to be placed in convenience stores.
Unlike conventional ATMs, which require special software, the new unit utilizes Microsoft Windows NT as an operating system and Internet Explorer as application software. Consumers can use it to buy goods on Internet sites and can also do business with retailers on other networks. Payment can be made in cash or by credit and debit cards.
The ATM will cost at least 3 million yen. Sales over the next three years are expected to total 20,000 machines.
