Y2K just won't go away. Mindful of the millennium, Joe Public is more than a little concerned if he can't get his money out of an ATM.
So when 300 or so MAC network ATMs went down last week, an event that would normally go unnoticed, the media wanted to know: "Was it related to Y2K?"
According to Melinda Mercurio, a Concord EFS spokesperson, the problem was not related to Y2K. One of MAC's terminal handlers simply experienced an application error. "They fixed it and it hasn't happened since," she said.
Some 200 KeyBank and about 80 National City machines were affected. In all instances, customers could not complete transactions. No errors in posting occurred. The problem was "a small, temporary interruption," said KeyBank spokesperson Mike Conway. "Everything is back to normal."
MAC uses a large number of terminal handlers, Mercurio explained, because technological glitches can happen. "Because we spread our business across a lot of handlers, there's never a situation where the entire East Coast is down, for example."
