SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- On Track Innovations, which develops contact and contactless microprocessor based smart card technology, is conducting field trials with VeriPass, a Hewlett Packard smart card solution.
With VeriPass, customers can choose their desired proprietary card payment method that is programmed onto a small key fob, which can be attached to a key ring. Customers can activate the key fob at a retail location to immediately use the Veripass system.
The field trials will determine ease of use and customer spending habits. Eventually, VeriPass will enable cash values to be stored on the fob, and also will allow gas station and convenience store owners to initiate loyalty, frequency and coupon programs.
Customers can touch their key fob to the face of a VeriPass Customer Interface Unit attached to a gas pump to begin fueling. After fueling, the pump dispenses a receipt. Customers may also opt to charge purchases directly to the VeriPass system inside the store. The system also allows customers to switch to another credit card at any time through quick reactivation inside the store.
The VeriPass system adapts to any dispenser that interfaces with the Ruby SuperSystem -- even, potentially, those without card readers.
