Seven months after it first enacted a $1 surcharge to non-customers who withdraw money from its ATMs, Chase Manhattan Bank has raised the fee to $1.50, according to an article in the New York Daily News.
Chase made an announcement that its decision is based on industry trends in the New York region. The bank operates more than 1,400 ATMs in New York and New Jersey.
Other local banks that already charge non-customers $1.50 per ATM transaction include Dime, Apple, Astoria Federal, Bank of New York, Fleet and HSBC, according to the New York Daily News.
Chase said the increase would not affect the bank's customers. Since it first enacted a surcharge, Chase had already been charging non- customers who used its ATMs in upstate New York and in portions of New Jersey.
In addition, Chase will continue to refrain from charging customers at about 60 ATMs located in areas where more than half of the residents earn low and moderate incomes as part of an outreach program.
