LAS VEGAS -- Global Cash Access (GCA) is allowing states to block access to its ATMs at more than 1,000 casinos in an effort to keep individuals from using their government benefits for gambling.
Only Delaware and Wyoming still allow access to the ATMs and cash access machines, according to a GCA release.
Nearly 85 percent of food stamp and other government benefits currently are issued through Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) cards, the release said. Those using the cards can access cash benefits through ATMs and food and cash benefits at POS terminals authorized to accept food stamp benefits.
GCA initiated a Responsible Gaming Partnership in 1999 in cooperation with the National Council on Problem Gambling. GCA's latest action is another aspect to the partnership, which encourages casino patrons to act responsibly.
Blocking access is the right thing to do, said Gregg Solomon, senior vice president of operations for Mandalay Resort Group in Las Vegas. Government assistance should benefit the family's well being rather than be used for gambling, he said in the release.
