KAMPALA, Uganda -- Customer reception to ATMs that allow users to conduct transactions in English or in Luganda, a tribal language, has been overwhelmingly positive, said an official of the Ugandan bank that installed the machines.
Crane Bank has installed seven ATMs in Uganda, three at bank branches and four at off-site locations, with plans to add four more, according to an allAfrica.com report.
Crane Bank assistant general manager Ajay Kumar said the ATMs allow users to conduct transactions in both English and Luganda. Business people in the area are excited about the Luganda capability of the ATMs, he said.
Response to the ATMs has been positive, Kumar said. "The ATMs have interested a cross section of the public like salary people, students, small traders and even the big companies here."
"There are many traders here who can not read English but are fluent in Luganda. Most of them are now considering to move to Crane Bank, because it can be accessed from 11 sites including fun places and business areas," said Daudi Wanyaka, a trader in Nakivubo area.
Kumar said that installation of all 11 ATMs would be complete by the end of August.
