KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia -- The electronic linkage among Malaysian ATMs has resumed, although within restricted hours as banks are still on alert until the planned switch to chip-based cards, according to a report in the Star. Following the reports of widespread unauthorized ATM withdrawals involving the use of cloned ATM cards, the electronic linkage via the Malaysian Electronic Payments System (MEPS) was temporarily halted and banks only allowed customers access to their own proprietary networks.

Chip-based ATM cards with higher security features are expected to be introduced by banks soon, with complete migration by January.
