LONDON -- The ATM Industry Association (ATMIA) has appointed industry veteran Ian Bain as executive director of its European chapter. Bain, who will take office Nov. 1, has more than 20 years' experience in the self-service industry, according to an ATMIA news release.

Bain, of Sheffield, England, has held senior management positions with NCR Corp. (NYSE:NCR). In 1983, Bain created a self-service market with NCR in Saudi Arabia by selling the country its first ATMs. In the late 1980s, he won the largest self-service contract in NCR's history in the United Kingdom -- more than 1,000 self-service terminals to a major UK bank, according to the release.
"We did not even advertise this vacancy outside of the ATM industry," said Mike Lee, ATMIA's international director. Lee, who had overseen the association's European operations, is relocating to South Africa at the end of this year. He'll be developing two new chapters, ATMIA Africa and ATMIA Australasia.
"We were looking for someone who knows our business intimately, especially in the UK and Europe, and who has extensive contacts of relevance to our business objectives in this region," Lee said. "It was during the second round of interviews that I began to believe that Ian was our man, who could wear the two hats of business development and industry involvement necessary in the position of running our UK and European chapter. Here was someone strong, trustworthy and self-driven, with a proven track record, and a passion for self-service, who could carry ATMIA Europe forward."
Bain said he's looking forward to meeting existing ATMIA members and extending that community.
"After spending a significant part of my career competing within the self-service industry, I know I shall enjoy competing for that industry in this challenging role with the ATMIA," he said.
