LONDON -- Barclays says it is installing nearly 2,000 ATMs with sunlight-readable monitors after customers complained about not being able to read ATM screens in strong light.
According to a report on Ananova, Barclays has already installed 300 of the new cash ATMs around the UK; it plans to roll out another 1,500 by the end of 2003.
The move comes after customer feedback showed not being able to read the ATM screen in the sun was the third most common complaint about ATMs, after machines being out of service and not having any money in them.
Barnaby Davis, head of ATMs at Barclays, said, "We've all been there on a sunny day where you are struggling to read what your balance is as the sun rays bounce off the cash machine. The new ATMs mean no more crouching over the cash machine or side stepping around it to block out the sun from the screens, making it easier for the public to use them."
Barclays also plans to introduce an audio function on the machines to make it easier for visually impaired people to use them, according to Ananova.
