CHICAGO -- The U.S. Secret Service arrested three people in connection with an ATM scam that authorities believe netted thousands of dollars, according to a report in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
The Journal Sentinel reported that the suspects used a skimmer placed over ATM card readers to obtain card data, and a small camera mounted above the machines to record customers' PINs. The information was then used to create counterfeit ATM cards, which were used to withdraw money from customers' accounts.
A security camera near a machine in Milwaukee recorded the suspects and the license plate number of their vehicle. The trio was traced to Chicago, where the scam reportedly had been used at several ATMs in the area.
When the unidentified suspects were arrested, investigators found 34 bogus ATM cards and receipts reflecting $2,433 in transactions.
