LONDON -- Five leading organizations -- the Greater Manchester Police (GMP), British Oil Security Syndicate (BOSS), the Association for Payment Clearing Services (APACS), Security Plus and TraceTag -- have become members of the UK's Banknote Watch Trust.
The Trust is an initiative that promotes awareness of technologies that stain notes during theft attempts that occur during ATM cash replenishment or at the ATM itself. "A stained note is probably a stolen note," is the group's motto. (See related story ATM security to dye for)
"The addition of two major trade associations, the UK's second largest police force and two leading industry players is a great boost for the Trust and will significantly enhance its base of expertise," said Banknote Watch Chairman Alan Townsend in a news release.
Banknote Watch members include security companies whose products can assist police with intelligence gathering and, in some cases, help to identify where the notes were stolen. Forensic products can also provide an evidence-trail back to the robber, which means that members of the public can help catch criminals by returning any stained notes that come into their possession.
