CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Bank of America is offering its cardholders surcharge-free access at 1,770 Mexican ATMs owned by Spanish bank Santander Serfin. BofA recently acquired a 24.9 percent interest in Santander Serfin's Mexican subsidiary, which is the third largest bank in Mexico.
The surcharge-free access is also available to users of BofA's SafeSend money transfer service. (See related story B of A targets Hispanics with SafeSend)
"More than 60 percent of SafeSend cardholders live near a Santander Serfin ATM, which makes unlimited, free ATM withdrawals a natural added convenience for these customers," said Eusebio Rivera, Hispanic executive for Bank of America, in a news release.
SafeSend recipients already receive limited free withdrawals at more than 20,000 Plus ATMs across Mexico.
Several other major U.S. financial institutions, including Wells Fargo, U.S. Bank and Citibank, offer ATM-based money transfer services to Mexico.
