CAPE TOWN, South Africa -- The ATM Industry Association (ATMIA) will produce "ATMs in Africa," its first conference and exhibition on African soil, March 25-26, 2004 at Cape Town's Waterfront.

According to a news release, the conference will afford attendees the opportunity to enjoy special discounted tourist excursions anywhere within South Africa, such as game park safaris, golfing, trips to Table Mountain by cable car, wineland tours and visits to Robben Island to see the cell where Nelson Mandela was incarcerated.

Confirmed participants include First National Bank, one of Africa's biggest banks, speaking on how to reach the unbanked through ATMs; Bank Windhoek, of Namibia; the South African Fraud Prevention Services, talking about fraud prevention strategies for South Africa; SmartPay Nigeria, a consortium of more than 30 banks in Nigeria; ATM Solutions, South Africa's pioneer independent deployer; AST Financial Solutions, describing the cost benefits and business advantages of cash recycling; and Tom Harper, president of ATMIA and NetWorld Alliance, publisher of ATMmarketplace.

"ATMs in Africa" also includes a Payments Forum looking strategically at the payments landscape in major markets of the world; technology user groups to discuss emerging technologies like SATCOMMS, Bluetooth and biometrics; and a panel discussion to debate whether cash or e-money will be the payment method of the future in South Africa and Africa.

A motivational speaker will kick off the event by drawing business lessons from a study of the San bushveld culture of Southern Africa.

Several new ATM technologies will be exhibited at the conference, according to the release. A cocktail reception at the end of Day One will provide networking opportunities.

Mike Lee, ATMIA's international director, said in the release that the event will be a showcase for ATMIA Africa, which was established last June.

"Anyone interested in current and emerging ATM markets in South Africa and the rest of the continent ought to be there," Lee said.
