BEIJING -- Oki Electric Industry Co., Ltd. of Japan has selected KAL's XFS-compliant Kalignite software for its new ATM model, the ATM21S, a machine with cash recycling functionality which will be manufactured and distributed in the Chinese market.

"The partnership with KAL enabled us to undertake open-standards-based application development while reducing the application development period," said Minoru Yamamoto, general manager of ATM Software Development in the Financial Solutions Company at Oki Electric.

Oki, which is Japan's number one ATM manufacturer with a 40 percent share of the installed base in the the country, will exhibit the product at the China International Exhibition on Financial Banking Technology & Equipment 2003 in Beijing starting Sept. 2.

According to a news release, the ATM21S adopts a bank-note recycling method developed by Oki in 1983. With this method, deposited notes are recycled to be reused for cash withdrawals from the ATM, thereby enabling effective cash utilization. Banks can select either a recycling method or a non-recycling method, in which deposits and withdrawal are managed separately.

The ATM21S holds up to 14,000 notes and can handle four types of Chinese bank notes, which covers most of the notes circulated in China: 10-, 20-, 50- and 100-yuan renminbi notes for deposit, and 50- and 100-yuan renminbi notes for withdrawal.

It is also equipped with a high-resolution 15-inch color LCD, enabling the display of moving images during standby. An optional passbook printing function can also be implemented, according to the release.

Oki's ATM21S will be initially available with two aplication options -- Kalignite NDC and the Kalignite Custom-Protocols Application, both of which are integrated with the new ATM and customizable to suit multiple host and network infrastructures and transport protocols including TCP/IP, X.25 and SNA.

Both applications run on v3.1 of the Kalignite Software Platform which fully supports the latest version of the XFS standard -- version 3, making Oki one of the first ATM manufacturers in the world to go into production with XFS 3, according to the release.

Several other manufacturers are targeting cash recycling products for China and other developing ATM markets such as India.
