CAPE TOWN, South Africa - The ATM Industry Association (ATMIA) has announced the winners and runners-up for its 2003 industry awards in the field of ATM security.
"In an environment of increased ATM crime in several countries, the awards are timely recognitions of achievement in this important area of the industry," said Mike Lee, ATMIA's international director, in a news release.
Judges Kurt Helwig, director of the Electronic Funds Transfer Association (U.S.); Tony Burke, director of the Australian Bankers' Association; and Lachlan Gunn, director of BenAlpin Ltd and author of a white paper on ATM lifecycle security (UK) selected the winners based on their long-term positive influence on improving the industry, excellence in technology or levels of service, leadership in applying best practices and specific and measurable achievements producing tangible results.
Winner of the ATM Security Best Technology award was Wincor Nixdorf for its new anti-card fraud solutions. In selecting Wincor Nixdorf as a winner, one of judge noted that Wincor's product defeats multiple threats and is compatible with a wide range of installations.
Runner-up for the award was Martin Security Smoke A/S for its smokecloak protection system. One of the judges noted: "The fact that Smokecloak is simple, low cost, and can be easily integrated into a premises alarm system (including real time) makes it an attractive addition to the security options available to ATM deployers. "
NCR was the winner in the ATM Security Best Practice category, for its holistic security system for retail ATMs. A judge praised this solution for excellence in a broad range of applications.
The runner-up was Travelex UK for its "end-to-end" view of the ATM cash cycle combined with its use of ink staining technology to provide a secure, flexible, reasonable cost platform enabling ATMs to be rolled out to high transacting locations. One judge described the solution as creating "a new benchmark for retail deployment."
In the category of Best Contribution to Promoting the Interests and Growth of the Industry (ATM security), joint winners were Richard Ambrose, manager, Technical & ATMs, Card Services, of APACS, and Graham McKay, Diebold's manager of Service Business Development, EMEA. Both industry veterans received their awards for positive long-term influence on the ATM industry, according to Lee.
The names of the winners and runners-up will be posted on ATMIA's roll of honor on all of its six regional Web sites. The awards are not endorsements of products.
