SYDNEY - Australian ATMs could run short of money before Christmas as security guards stop delivering cash in areas they believe are too dangerous.
According to a report in the Sydney Morning Herald, the move by the guards follows 10 robberies of armored vans or cash escorts since August.
The Transport Workers Union announced the move Dec. 18 after a meeting in Sydney attended by 30 delegates representing 2,000 guards employed by Armaguard, Chubb and Brinks.
The union's state secretary, Tony Sheldon, said some bans on cash deliveries would go ahead in areas where guards believed security was insufficient.
The action, which could leave shoppers short of cash over Christmas, would be maintained until authorities could guarantee that employers were taking all possible steps to guarantee the safety of guards, according to the Morning Herald.
"We are seeking immediate improvements to safety practices including manning levels, surveillance and risk assessment," Sheldon said. "The delegates have said they want those things implemented immediately."
