MUMBAI, India - The State Bank of India (SBI), has signed an agreement with Reliance Infocomm, for setting up 100 ATMs with CDMA wireless connectivity.
According to a CXOtoday report, the wireless capability will enable quick deployment of machines, at about half the cost of the VSAT telecommunications typically used for ATMs in India.
Other banks already using wireless technology from Reliance Infocomm on their ATMs are ICICI, HDFC, Citibank and Bank of Punjab.
Unlike VSAT-based connectivity, the CDMA wireless connectivity eliminates the need of rooftop rights and the resultant delays. This also results in reduction of cost of ownership.
SBI, which has a network of more than 3,800 ATMs, earlier installed the first ever floating wireless ATM, in a ferry that transports people and vehicles to Kochi from Vypeen in Kerala, in February. (See related story State Bank of India floats idea of ATM on a boat)
