British group pushing against growing ATM charges

The Guardian: LONDON - Britain's prized network of free-to-use cash machines is "under threat," with the number of ATMs that are increasing charges by 40 percent in the first six months of this year, according to a report published Sept. 21.

Nationwide building society, a long-time campaigner on the issue, said providers of fee-charging machines were pursuing an aggressive expansion strategy, with the problem exacerbated by banks selling off some of their ATMs to independent operators.

Four years after Nationwide scored a victory in a battle with Barclays over ATM charges, the society said the rapid rise of so-called convenience machines meant charging was once again a real issue.
