NORTH CANTON, Ohio - Diebold Inc. is combining its procurement, manufacturing engineering and manufacturing groups into a single organization that is focused on driving improvements in the company's supply chain.

According to a news release, the new organization will be led by George S. Mayes Jr., vice president of global supply chain management, who will continue to be responsible for global manufacturing.

"This represents the first step in creating an infrastructure that supports improved communication and coordination between manufacturing, procurement and our suppliers," said Diebold's newly named president and chief executive Thomas W. Swidarski. "Diebold has the expertise and global footprint to more effectively leverage its manufacturing capabilities in emerging markets such as China, India and Brazil to gain a competitive advantage. Our goal is to lower our costs, shorten lead times and increase customer satisfaction."

Mayes, who spent 15 years in manufacturing, quality and engineering at General Motors, Delphi and Stanley Works, will use his experience to leverage supply-chain efficiency to drive quality and cost improvements.

The new team includes Kevin Ku, managing director of supply chain solutions for the Asia-Pacific region; Gary Langenderfer, senior director of global procurement - shared and indirect services; Frank Natoli, senior director of program management, business transformation and supply chain solutions; David Boeberitz, director of manufacturing engineering' Linda Parcher, director of global procurement - electronics components and supplies; and Steven Sherman, director of global procurement - indirect commodities.

Diebold also is expected to form a global order-to-cash improvement team, whose goal is to shorten the amount of time between customer-order and customer-payment through reduced lead times, improved demand planning and forecasting, and simplified product offerings and configurations. The group will represent a cross-section of expertise throughout the corporation, including the areas of finance, IT, product engineering, sales, service and supply-chain management.
