Memphis Business Journal: Regions Financial Corp. and AmSouth Bancorp have agreed to merge, a move that will form one of the United States' largest holding companies. Regions Bank, the second-largest bank in Memphis, operates a network of 1,600 ATMs and 1,300 offices. It's a subsidiary of Birmingham, Ala.-based Regions, a full-service financial-services company. AmSouth, also based in Birmingham, has more than 680 branch offices and 1,200 ATMs. Under the Regions moniker, the new company will have nearly $140 billion in assets, hold nearly $100 billion in deposits, employ 37,000 people and operate 2,000 branches in 16 states in the South, Midwest and Texas.
