The Seattle Times: Police are investigating a string of thefts that involves stealing some $60,000 from an ATM over the course of several months. The thefts occurred at one Boeing Employees Credit Union ATM in the Smokey Point area of Snohomish County. The thieves were able to manipulate the ATM's software so that the ATM did not recognize it had dispensed money, thus leading the machine to dispense the requested money again. The ATM was dispensing twice the amount cash it should have, a credit union spokesman said. The thieves used a combination of personal accounts and prepaid debit cards to withdraw the money. One thief allegedly involved in the scam is 17-year-old girl who was caught on ATM surveillance withdrawing more than $16,000 from the ATM.
